Maya Bay is not just a beach—it’s the beach. Located on the uninhabited Phi Phi Leh island in Thailand’s Andaman Sea, Maya Bay is globally known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, and snow-white sand. What really shot it into the spotlight was Leonardo DiCaprio’s 2000 film The Beach, which was filmed here and introduced millions to its breathtaking scenery. Although the film had mixed reviews, Maya Bay's fame skyrocketed.
But paradise came with a cost. Years of overcrowding—up to 5,000 visitors daily—began damaging the delicate ecosystem. In 2018, the Thai government made a bold move: they closed Maya Bay to allow its coral and marine life to recover. After nearly four years, it reopened with stricter conservation rules. Boats are no longer allowed to land on the beach, and swimming is now prohibited to protect the marine environment.
